Kenneth “Ken” M. Hansen

God and the angels needed another mentor and someone to be a "big brother", and Ken left us suddenly on Wednesday November 13 following a medical procedure that afternoon to fill that role. Ken had major heart surgery two weeks ago and was in the St. Luke's ICU receiving wonderful care. No one knew how much his heart condition was impacting his life until his surgery. He entered the hospital weaker than we knew and only got weaker as his body could not keep up.
Ken was born and raised in Duluth, played youth hockey and was a member of the 1962 Bantam City and State championship team. He attended Central High School; where he met his wife Elaine; played football and hockey; sang in the choir; and was part of the Class of 66. Boy Scouts were a big part of his life - he attained the rank of Eagle Scout; attended the 1964 National Jamboree, known to watch over the younger Scouts; was an Assistant Scoutmaster in Troop 9 and volunteered to be with the youngest Scouts for a week at summer camp; he was found at Grandma's Marathon Mile Marker 24 with Troop 9 for a number of years; cooked for weekend camps; and mentored new leaders and scouts. His professional life in drafting and engineering gave him the opportunity to design large and small hydraulic systems. He loved his work and was proud of the contribution he made to efficient and productive manufacturing and business operations. While in South Dakota, he was active with the Optimist Club and contributed back to the community and youth activities.
Youth hockey became a passion and he was a youth hockey coach who was recognized for encouraging players to improve their skills and play as a team, even if they were not at the highest levels. His teams had great fun, built character, and produced some very good hockey players. He has been on the Duluth Amateur Hockey Board (DAHA) and served several terms as President, as Chair of the Rules and Grievance committee, and donated time each year to tournaments and DAHA fundraising activities. He was also an avid UMD Bulldog fan and enjoyed his season tickets.
Outside activities were important to him and he was the perennial organizer and cook for Opening Fishing, fishing trips to Canada, late December and February ice fishing trips to Lake of the Woods. He enjoyed pheasant hunting in South Dakota and deer hunting in Minnesota. At Moonlight Bay on Leech Lake where he liked to spend most of the summer fishing and playing golf, he coordinated the cooking for the beef bar-b-que and the Labor Day pig roast each year.
Ken was given 9 lives and they ran out. He will be remembered as kind, honest, independent, compassionate, helpful, encouraging, and full of love. His memory will live on with his family - wife Elaine; children Sharon, Kristine and Ken Jr.; grandchildren Tony, Sean, Becci and Tyler; brothers Bill, Tom and Tim and their wives; special friends Terry, Eileen, and Ralph; his Moonlight Bay family; Kathy Angelos the mother of Kristine and Ken Jr.; and many other relatives and friends. His dog Buddie hastened her trip over the rainbow bridge to be waiting for Ken, leaving Shadow without his two best friends.
Visitation is 3pm to 5pm on Sunday November 18, and one hour before the 11 am Monday November 19 remembrance at Dougherty Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations to the DAHA Hank Jensen Fund, 120 S 30th Ave W., Duluth, MN 55806, to help all youth be able to experience hockey, would be very much appreciated. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral home

Raymond Frankowiak

Raymond J. “Ray” Franckowiak, 72, of Gnesen Township died on Wednesday January 6, 2021 at Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Duluth on January 27, 1948 to Joseph and Helen (Wengrin) Franckowiak. Ray graduated from Duluth Central High School, Class of 66. He married Marie Leyes on October 22, 1977 in St. Benedict Catholic Church, Duluth.

Ray started his career as a welder and a glass cutter working at various shops in Duluth. He eventually found his home at MN/DOT as a plow driver and highway construction and maintenance worker. He retired from MN/DOT after 22 years of dedicated service from a job he loved. He often said that his only regret from his time at MN/DOT was that he would have liked to be able to have another 10 years there. Upon retirement, Ray decided he wanted to spend his time at home in the garage while Marie decided she wanted to spend the time they had to do some traveling. So, travel they did. Western Canada, Utah & New Mexico, Washington DC, and Cape Cod were some of their favorites. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Gnesen. Ray was very adept at all things mechanical. He loved working in his garage on building, modifying, or restoring everything from plow trucks and classic cars, to snowmobiles and track vehicles, to skid steers, wood processors and many other hydraulic-powered toys. He prided himself in his ability to build just about anything from only a picture. Ray raised his 3 boys to share his passion for fixing things, and always took the time to help out or give advice to anyone in need. He was never bashful to tell anyone that would listen about how proud he was of his sons. Ray was always happy when he had a wrench in his hand and dirt under his fingernails.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Sandy Franckowiak Watters

Sandra “Sandy” J. Watters, 74, of Duluth, died peacefully Sunday, Dec. 25th at Essentia St. Mary’s, with her family by her side. A two-time cancer survivor, Sandy was adamant that she would not die of cancer, and she was right (as she usually was) - ultimately her body was unable to beat Covid-19.
Sandy was born Nov. 17, 1948, in Duluth to Stanley and Audrey Franckowiak. She embraced the role of oldest daughter, taking on anything that was expected or asked of her without fear or hesitation. As a child she could often be found alongside her family working at her grandparents’ store and tavern, the Normanna Inn. She was a doer and liked to make lists, much to the chagrin of her daughters who woke up to the dreaded to-do list every Saturday morning.
Sandy graduated from Duluth Central High School and earned a degree in Teaching at UMD. She dedicated her life to children, first teaching at Park Point School, and after taking off time to raise her daughters, teaching 5th grade at St. John’s School for 28 years, specializing in Social Studies. She was a beloved teacher, always available to her students and focused on creating meaningful experiences for them. She taught her students to observe intently, think critically and believe there was nothing they couldn’t do.
To support herself through college Sandy worked at Falk’s Pharmacy in Woodland. She never lost the large bicep she developed from scooping ice cream at the soda fountain for so many years and never forgave herself for accidentally dumping an entire milkshake in a woman’s purse. Sandy (the introvert) was convinced that she would never marry, but a mutual friend introduced her to her future husband, Pat Watters (the extrovert), saying he thought they’d be good together - they were married on July 26, 1969. Even after 53 years of marriage, she referred to Pat as her perfect partner, often explaining that certainly no one else would be able to put up with her.
She had great faith, being a life-long member of St. John’s Church where she was baptized, married, and now laid to rest. She enjoyed having coffee with the retirees from St. John’s. Her quilting and sewing room was her happy place. She loved to bake, garden, read and shop, but most of all, Sandy loved being around her family, especially her grandchildren who often went to Grandma’s to create master pieces through arts and crafts .
She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Audrey Franckowiak; in-laws, LaVerne and Ruby Watters, and her brother-in-law, Bill Walsh.

Sandy is survived by the love of her life, Pat; daughters, Amy Watters, and Jennifer Watters; grandchildren, Juniper and Finn Hansen; siblings, Mary Jo (Jerry) Lapcinski and Sharon Walsh; several nieces and nephews, and many cousins and friends. She will be greatly missed. Candidates for her replacement as matriarch of the family are currently under consideration.
A very special thank you to the caregivers and staff at the Essentia ICU, Masonic Cancer Center (Dr. Desai), and Essentia Health Cancer Center (Dr. Kebbecus) who were always kind, empathetic and honest

Al (Tim) Eastman

He graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1966 and later married Linda Sieger from Duluth. He enlisted in the military at the age of 17 and had a distinguished career, retiring from the Duluth 148th Air National Guard as a Chief Master Sergeant after serving his country for over 29 years. He received the Air Force Achievement Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal during his service. One of Al’s passions was sharing stories about his military service and showing gratitude to fellow veterans. After retirement, he spent time raising his three boys, coaching basketball and soccer, going skiing, and enjoying the family cabin in Cromwell. Additionally, he found ways to stay busy by working as the Zoning Administrator for Lakewood Township and as a Business Agent for Duluth Stagehands where he organized the labor for concerts and events. After Linda retired, they became residents of Bradenton, FL, and enjoyed traveling to various destinations, including the Caribbean, Alaska, and Cuba. He was an active member of his retirement community, Gold Tree, where he enjoyed spending the winter playing a variety of sports, including tennis, pickleball, and golf. He also attended driveway parties and participated in many gatherings with the fun-loving folks of Gold Tree, where he enjoyed playing card games such as Pegs and Jokers. Known for his great sense of humor, Al had a way of putting others at ease and brightening their day with a well-timed joke. In 2018, he became a proud grandfather for the first time to Kallen. His joy doubled when Avery was born in 2020, and he was thrilled when he welcomed his granddaughter Kendall in 2022, the first girl in the family. Spending time with his grandchildren brought him so much happiness, and he cherished every moment he had with them. Jim Christoferson

In the early morning of May 1, 2024, James "Jim" Steven Christoferson was called home by his Heavenly Father and at First Light, awoke to his beloved wife, Pam, in Heaven.

Always exceptionally affectionate, generous, and loving, Jim was born the definition of a Friday's Child in Duluth, Minnesota, on July 16, 1948. He was the youngest of three boys born to William and Angeline Christoferson. Raised in Duluth, Jim began his career in radio at age 14, operating a pirate radio station from a 2-transistor radio in his bedroom and swapping 10-inch tapes of religious shows every Sunday morning on KAOH AM in Duluth.

In high school at Duluth Central, Jim was active in journalism and worked as a waiter at the Pickwick Restaurant & Pub while dreaming of becoming a full-time Disc Jockey in college. Even though they grew up just miles apart, it was not until college at the University of Minnesota Duluth when A Guy Like Jim noticed the Girl in the Pink Sweater. This was when the Story of Jim and Pamela Anne Christoferson began to unfold. On June 27, 1970, their first beautiful chapters began when Jim married Pam and embarked on their faithful and Christ-filled lifetime adventure.

Continuously driven, Jim was a major market DJ in California by the time he was 25, a radio manager at 30, and a radio station owner by 40. His strong entrepreneurial spirit led to many broadcasting endeavors, awards, and accolades. While those things fulfilled him professionally, his true passion was building a strong family with his wife and raising his five children.

Throughout their 47-year marriage, Jim's career in radio took the couple from Duluth to Ft. Worth, to Los Angeles, Monterey, and back to Texas. Amidst all the moves, Jim's charm and self-deprecating humor allowed him to make lifelong friends in each of those cities. Jim and Pam established roots in Abilene and built a home where they raised their family for the last 38 years.

Whether it was managing a radio station, establishing one of his own, serving on countless non-profit boards across Abilene, reading the voice of God at Easter Mass, acting as Eucharistic minister at Holy Family Catholic Church, or attending countless baseball, football, volleyball, debates, concerts, or plays for all those he loved, Jim was the true embodiment of a businessman, family man and servant leader.

Jim's hobbies included reading, walking Maggie endless miles, talking creative with his kids, working on his podcasts, Radio…What Happened? and The Fumbling C's, fantasy football, continuing his work at the Delta Group, helping to plan his high school reunions with friends and fellow Trojans, and endless hours of Beatles Trivia. Jim worked tirelessly to serve his clients, friends, and family. A devoted father, Jim would humbly boast his proudest accomplishment was raising his five children alongside Pam.

He left this earth after a day of laughter, hope, and contentment. Jim is survived and forever missed by his daughter Jennifer Christoferson and partner Robert Olson; son James and wife Lee-Douglass Christoferson; daughter Melissa and husband Christopher Hawn; daughter Patricia and husband Jeff Dressen; son William and wife Laura Christoferson; and grandchildren Jacob and Allie Zindler, Joshua, Lucy, and Samuel Hawn, Kelton Tobin, JR and Kate Dressen, and Brooks Christoferson. He is also survived by his brothers Ole and Bill, their spouses Maureen and Kathy, and in-laws Peter, Kit, Debbie, Mary, and Judy. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Angeline, and his loving and faithful spouse, Pamela.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you for the gentle support and love so many have generously offered these last four months. A very special thank you is expressed to Jim's friends at the Delta Group, Townsquare Media, Cumulus Broadcasting, and the amazing care and direction received from Carl, Leticia, and Deanna at Lincare, as well as Shandra Oden and the excellent staff and friends at Kinder Hearts Home Health and Hospice.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Abilene with Rev. Msgr. Frederick Nawarskas co-officiating, directed by Elliot-Hamil Family Funeral Home, 5701 Highway 277 South, Abilene.

Mike was born in Duluth, MN to Barbara and Donald McLish.
He grew up in Chester Park with his older brother Donald and his younger sister Patty. He enjoyed family lake vacations in the summer and was an avid fisherman his whole life. Mike graduated from Central High School in 1966 and felt a strong connection to his class and community. Mike was a talented piano player who played by ear. He used his musical talent to connect with friends and family and often played with others. Near the end of his career, he sold real estate in Northern Wisconsin. Mike was a kind and generous man. He was quick to share a laugh and did not hesitate to show up for the people that he loved. He married Kay in 1995 and found much happiness in the life they built together in Solon Springs, WI. They hosted theme parties with the Magnificent Seven, created beautiful gardens, and fished together. He also stayed connected with old friends and spent most Wednesdays eating lunch with Peter Austin, Ron Abernethy, and Stan Gershgol. Mike was a dedicated parent who did everything he could for his family. He moved to Maryland 4 years ago to be closer to most of his children and grandchildren. He adored his grandchildren and shared many happy moments with them. His unconditional love was a constant in their lives.
